Essential Oils

The marriage of Chinese Herbs and Essential Oils (EO):

Over the centuries plant based medicine especially in the form of dried herbs and herbal formulas have been and are currently a widely respected branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Yet, it is  important to recognize that essential oils of the plant kingdom contain the most highly active and effective medicinal properties of any given herb.  Essential oils are the life blood and the immune system within the plant.  While there are some “oils” that were and are a part of the the Chinese pharmacopeia, the herbs weren’t widely extracted as oils probably due to the complicated process of distillation. The use of dried herbs were commonly prepared by boiling them to extract the vital properties which then allowed them to be used as a medicinal tea, or made into a tincture.

When plants are used dried as in herbal tea or to make supplements, 95 to 97 percent of their essential oils are lost and their capacity to help us is diminished.  The evolution of plant based medicine is the backbone of many western medications and historically, it has been used globally by indigenous cultures worldwide.  Having options pertaining to how we choose to deliver the medicinal properties of the plant kingdom is a blessing.   The ability to create individualized herbal  formulas in variable styles, whether it be an herbal tincture, a tea, a granulated formula, a topical application, a single essential oil, or an essential oil blend with respect to the purpose we wish to achieve has specificity.  Regardless of the delivery system, it is  the chemical constituents within the essential oils of plants that have been and can be differentiated and evaluated  that help us to heal when we use this “branch” of medicine.

Most will agree that using an alternative to western medications is particularly important during this time when people are developing antibiotic resistance, addictions, as well as a lack of tolerance to many pharmaceutical treatments.  Essential oils, like herbs, can be anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, clear heat and toxins (infections), clear wind cold (common cold more runny), clear wind heat (common cold more dry or yellow mucous), regulate the immune system, clear wind damp (anti-inflammatory), regulate the qi (which is to move stagnation), tonify yin (more moistening),  tonify yang (enhance life-gate fire or energize), and nourish shen (calm spirit).   According to the Materia Medica, the Chinese bible of herbal medicine and the theories of creating formulas and strategies, there are classifications of the medicinal properties of herbs, as well as when they are combined to become an herbal formula.  These classifications, qualities, and properties  mirror the molecular properties that the plants themselves are valued for.  They can be combined to enhance the actions we wish to target.

Not all oils are equal!  I believe that Young Living essential oils are superior. One can feel secure that all Young Living Essential Oils meet the high standards for the International Organization for Standardization which is a worldwide federation that includes 130 countries.   Yet it is important to note that Young Living standards are even higher.  Young Living’s research and quality control laboratories have matched the instruments used at the National Center for Scientific Research.  Each batch of oil is guaranteed to have the highest  possible therapeutic value for their oils based on an essential oil library that has over 280,000 compound references.  Their world wide quality control laboratories use gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to analyze plant concentrates.

Essential oils  can stand alone, be used as a blend, or in combination with other herbal formulations. They can also be applied topically, taken internally or used in the culinary arts. The vital molecular properties fall easily into  the existing guidelines of how a trained herbalist can manipulate a formula, but they can also be easily understood and used by anyone.  Essential Oils have a very light molecular weight that can penetrate cell membranes and diffuse throughout the blood and tissues.  The molecules in the oils mimic the molecules that the human body uses to repair itself. Essential oils can be anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, clear heat and toxins, clear wind cold , clear wind heat, enhance or regulate the immune system, enhance circulation, clear wind damp, nourish shen (spirit), and thereby modulate our reactions to stress, nourish neurological function, and help us to heal from emotional traumas.

Young Living’s Essential Oils are distilled from plant concentrates. A plant concentrate equates to how much or how little the plant will distill down to.  Distillation involves putting plant material into a large stainless steel cylinder and then running steam up from the bottom.  The steam picks up the oil sacs from the plants and is taken out through the top of the distiller.  The steam is cooled back into water and the oil floats to the top, and can be removed.  These distilleries can be as large as 20 feet high and 8 feet across. Purity is extremely important.

An empowering concept is that no special degrees or professional training program is required to purchase or use these powerful substances. However, certain guidelines  for how these substances can be used does require a certain amount of knowledge.  These essential oils are  like power toolsThey need to be respected while using them responsibly, and safely.  Essential oils can be used every day and the the Young Living Lifestyle is quite contagious as the benefits of using their products are that great. Unfortunately, many oils, in fact, most oils, even those found in health food stores may be synthetic, adulterated,  diluted, and can actually be toxic to us.  Synthetic oils are everywhere.  Young Living is dedicated to having the highest quality essential oils in the world.  These are the only oils I use because I know they are clean, safe, effective and they reflect the values of wellness, purpose and abundance.
